The American Civil War was a defining moment in American and Virginia history.  Caused by sectionalism, state rights, and slavery, the Civil War divided the country and Virginia.  Virginia was at the center of the Civil War and produced numerous individuals that impacted the era as well as witnessed many battles that affected the outcome. The results of the Civil War led to serious economic, political, and social problems as the country and Virgina tried to rebuild/reconstruct.
